Best 35mm Point and Shoot Film Cameras Under $100 | 2023 SoCal Cameras

My name is Griffin Kerscher I own SoCal Cameras and have tested and used well over 10,000 cameras. So as you can imagine I have used just about every point and shoot in just about every condition from beat up to mint. Here are my recommendations for best budget to mid-range point and shoots that will still give you sharp, non-distorted, images at fair price (well under $100)

Pentax IQZoom Series (around $75)

This is a series of film cameras were first introduced in the late 1980s. A properly cleaned and tested one will run around $75 as of 2023. Here are a few reasons why I chose this series:

  1. Durability and reliability: The Pentax IQZoom cameras were built to last and are known for their ruggedness and durability over most of the other models on the market. This series in particular feels really solid mechanically, some models will become louder over time from standard use but Pentax IQZooms often remain feeling like well oiled machines. These cameras are made of high-quality materials and are designed to withstand heavy use. They tend to be on the bulkier side but it is well worth putting up with bulk for the quality you get.
  2. Simple operation: The Pentax IQZoom cameras are designed with simplicity in mind. They have straightforward controls that make it easy to take great photos, even for those who are new to photography. The cameras also have clear and bright viewfinders, making it easier to frame your shots.
  3. Optical Quality: The lenses on Pentax IQZoom cameras are designed to deliver sharp, clear images with accurate colors and minimal distortion. The optical quality of these lenses ensures that images captured with these cameras look natural and lifelike.
  4. Zoom Capability: All of the Pentax IQZoom cameras are equipped with zoom lenses, which allow you to adjust the focal length and capture subjects at different distances. The zoom capability of these lenses makes it easier to frame your shots and capture images from a variety of perspectives. The IQZoom 200 will zoom up to 200mm which is very unique to other series on the market.

Minolta Freedom Series (around $65)

This series of compact and affordable film cameras were first introduced in the 1980s. A properly cleaned and tested one will run around $65 as of 2023. Despite their small size, these cameras offer many features that make them a great option for photographers of all levels. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Compact design: Most of the Minolta Freedom cameras are small and lightweight, making them easy to carry with you wherever you go. This makes them a great option for travel or street photography. Some (not most) of the models within this series that have fewer settings have a bit of a cheaper feel to them but will still take amazing photos.
  2. Affordability: The Minolta Freedom cameras are very affordable, making them a great option for those who are new to photography or for those who are on a tight budget. This affordability is huge because it means that you can try out different types of film without breaking the bank.
  3. Easy to use: The Minolta Freedom cameras have straightforward controls that make it easy to take great photos. However, you can still find models that come with a large variety of shooting and flash modes. This makes them a great option for beginners or for anyone who wants a camera that is easy to use.
  4. High-quality images: Despite their small size and affordability, the Minolta Freedom cameras have amazing lenses that are comparable or better than most point and shoots on the market.

Fujifilm Discovery Series (around $65)

This series of film cameras were first introduced in the 1990s. A properly cleaned and tested one will run around $65 as of 2023. These cameras offer a range of features including Fujifilm's innovative drop loading technology that make them a great option for photographers of all levels. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Versatility: The Fujifilm Discovery cameras are versatile, with a range of shooting modes that allow you to take photos in a variety of situations. Whether you're taking portraits, landscapes, or action shots, the Fujifilm Discovery has a shooting mode that is perfect for the task at hand.
  2. User-friendly: The Fujifilm Discovery cameras are very easy to use with straightforward controls that make it easy to take great photos. This makes them a great option for beginners or for anyone who wants a camera that is easy to use.
  3. High-quality images: The Fujifilm Discovery cameras produce high-quality images with excellent sharpness and clarity their lenses are just as good as anything else on the market despite the price.
  4. Robust design: The Fujifilm Discovery cameras are built to last, with a robust design that can withstand heavy use. This makes them a great option for those who plan to use their camera frequently, or for anyone who wants a camera that is built to last. There isn’t a single camera in this series that I can think of that feel cheaply made. Some models like the 270 zoom, 290 zoom are very compact, well deigned, and powerful.
  5. Drop Loading Technology: One of the key features of the Fujifilm Discovery cameras is their innovative drop loading technology. This technology makes it easy to load film into the camera, as you simply drop the film into the camera and it is automatically wound onto the spool. This eliminates the need for fiddly film loading, making the process much faster and more efficient.
